The game focuses on two playable characters, Ellie and Abby, in a post-apocalyptic United States. Ellie seeks revenge after suffering a tragedy, while Abby becomes involved in a conflict between her militia and a religious cult. The game is played from a third-person perspective and allows the player to fight against human enemies and infected creatures using firearms, improvised weapons, and stealth. It is the sequel to The Last of Us Part I.

- This category needs you to complete the Seattle Day 1 chapter, from the Ellie's "Seattle Day 1" screen to the Ellie's "Seattle Day 2" screen.
- This category needs you to complete the Seattle Day 2 chapter, from the Ellie's "Seattle Day 2" screen to the Ellie's "Seattle Day 3" screen.
- This category needs you to complete the Seattle Day 3 chapter, from the Ellie's "Seattle Day 3" screen until you can control Abby.
- This category needs you to complete the Seattle Day 1 chapter, from the Abby's "Seattle Day 1" screen until you can Abby's "Seattle Day 2" screen.
- This category needs you to complete the Seattle Day 2 chapter, from the Abby's "Seattle Day 2" screen until you can Abby's "Seattle Day 3" screen.
- This category needs you to complete the Seattle Day 3 chapter, from the Abby's "Seattle Day 3" screen until you can control Ellie in the farm.
- This category needs you to complete the Santa Barbara section with Ellie. Starts once you can control Ellie at the boat and ends after the Abby fight.
Subcategories
- (only for a deathless run): You can NOT heal in any way. Be it from med kit or snacks, even after scripted damage unless forced too. Be careful when picking up items next to a snack because if you accidentally pick one up, the run is invalid. (Strongly recommended to turn OFF auto pick up during a no healing attempt).
- NO crafting at all. But you CAN pick up items that are craftable throughout the game like molotovs, nail bombs, etc... as they become available.
